Cebuana Lhuillier has become a partner for Filipino consumers like this couple who are remitting money to their loved ones in one of the financial institutions almost 2,000 branches nationwide.

It all started in 1953, when former French Consul of the Philippines Henry Lhuillier established a string of pawnshops called Agencias in his hometown in Cebu. Soon after, he passed the baton to his eldest son – Philippe Lhuillier (now Philippine Ambassador to Portugal) – who inherited the business and continued his father’s legacy in 1969. Philippe brought the pawnshop business to Manila, opened four outlets in Libertad Street, Pasay, and changed the name from Agencia to Cebuana Lhuillier. Thus, Cebuana Lhuillier was born.

Since the 1990s, Cebuana Lhuillier continues to expand the business by adding branches in key cities and building a reputation in the pawning industry. But with the succession of Philippe Lhuillier’s son Jean Henri, the face of Cebuana changed from being a pawnshop giant to the country’s largest micro financial company.
