Kirin 980, Huawei’s new chipset, features improved performance, intelligence, efficiency, and connectivity
The processing “brain” inside every smartphone relied on for mobile photography, media consumption, navigation, connectivity (among other things) is the System-on-Chip (SOC). For Huawei, this chip is the Kirin. Improving upon the Kirin 970 that powers Huwei flagships (Mate 10 and 10 Pro, P20 and P20 Pro) is the new Kirin 980.
The Kirin 980
- is the world’s first commercial mobile phone SoC chipset made with TSMC’s 7NM process, which integrates 6.9 billion transistors for improved performance and energy efficiency.
- has a dual-core Neural Processing Unit (NPU) (the previous 970 SoC only had one NPU), which means faster and more accurate responses to AI-assisted features, including object recognition in photography.
- boasts of being the first in the world to have Cortex A76 cores and Mali G76 Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). These promise incredible gaming performance and faster app launches for end users.
- promises to deliver a better Wi-Fi experience – it is equipped with the Hi1103 Wi-Fi module, the world’s fastest Wi-Fi chipset as well as the world’s first to support a maximum bandwidth of 160Mb. The chipset supports a theoretical maximum download speed of 1.7Gps—which is 1.7 times the industry standard.
- performs 20% faster than its predecessor, while using 40% less energy at the same time. Users get to do more with their Kirin 980-powered device without worrying about battery drain. Because Huawei doesn’t source their chips to third parties, they have direct control over the development and production of the chips they install in every device.
