Manila, Philippines – Cocoi Base goes solo for the first time with the exhibit “Structures and Experience”, which opened on September 16 at the Gateway Gallery Studio. It will run for two weeks until September 30, 2023.

Cocoi Base is an architect and a self-trained artist who frequently collaborates with The Authenticity Zero Collective. His background in arts started in 2015 when he joined a group exhibition at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in a show entitled “Oxymoron of Patterns”.

His most recent invitation was to participate in Art Anton Gallery’s group show titled “As Infinite as the Multitude of Visual Variables” held last April 2023. The works that will be featured in this first solo exhibit can be traced back to his exploration of basic geometries and colors with pen on paper in 2018.

Later on, he ventured into mixed media (balsa wood, readymade objects, 3D printed entourages, magazines, etc.). He now uses mostly acrylic on canvas. Previously, his canvases wouldn’t go beyond standard sizes. At present, he uses panel-sized pieces, which can easily occupy a wall in a room. He fills these panels with details that are a far cry from his usual geometric patterns

This first solo exhibition encapsulates Cocoi’s medium change and compositional maturity while maintaining the intersection of his architectural foundations with visual art. The artworks featured are a culmination of separate “phases” of his artistic trajectory which also exemplify his push and pull between simplicity and complexity, and the objective world and non-representation.
