Witness comedian Jo Koy make history as the first Filipino to host the Golden Globes.

Filipinos, represent! Comedian Jo Koy has been announced as the host of the 2024 Golden Globes, making him the first Filipino-American to host the Golden Globes.

“We are thrilled to have Jo host the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards and bring his infectious energy and relatable humor to kick off Hollywood’s award season,” said Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne in an official statement. “We know Jo is bringing his A-game.”

With several successful Netflix specials that pull inspiration from his Filipino-American upbringing, Koy (whose real name is Joseph Glenn Herbert) is one of the most sought-after comedians in the industry. Last year, Koy’s film Easter Sunday became the first major studio movie with an all-Filipino cast. But this will be Jo Koy’s first time hosting an award show, and fans are excited to see what he brings to the Golden Globes stage.

“I’ve stepped onto a lot of stages around the world in my career, but this one is going to be extra special. I’m so excited to be hosting the Golden Globes this year,” said Koy. “This is that moment where I get to make my Filipino family proud. Mahal Kita (Google it)!”

“Jo’s genuine brand of comedy is sure to entertain our honorees in the room at the Beverly Hilton and viewers at home. We are excited to work with him to make this year’s show laugh-out-loud from beginning to end,” said executive-producing showrunners Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner.

The 81st Golden Globe Awards will be the first major awards show of the season. Filipinos can watch the show’s live broadcast on January 8, 2024, at 9:00 AM (Philippine Standard Time) exclusively on Lionsgate Play.

The nominations for the Golden Globes have also been announced, with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie leading the pack with nine nods, including Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) and acting nominations for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer follows closely behind with eight nominations, including Best Picture (Drama) and nominations for actors Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt.

The Golden Globes is the world’s largest award show celebrating the best of film and television. This year, two new awards have been added: Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
