Riders gear up for a safe and joyful journey with this essential guide

Muntinlupa City, Philippines –January 2, 2024 – As the holiday season approaches, many motorcycle enthusiasts will be hitting the road to visit family and friends. While enjoying the open road and festive atmosphere, safety should always be a top priority. To promote safe and responsible riding during the holidays, the Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association (MDPPA) shares essential tips and best practices during this crucial time.

“The holidays can be a busy and exciting, but it’s important not to let that excitement compromise your safety on the road,” said MDPPA President Mr. Norminio Mojica. “Our rider’s guide provides valuable information and resources to help motorcyclists stay safe and navigate the potential hazards associated with holiday travel.”

Focus on the road. Holiday season in the Philippines is known for flashy and grandiose decorations which might be distracting while on the road. Undistracted attention is your best companion on the road. During the holiday rush, it’s easy to get caught up in the festive atmosphere but remember, focus on the road to ensure a safe journey. Resist the temptation to let holiday excitement cloud your judgment and keep your attention undivided for a smooth and secure ride.

Don’t drink and drive and don’t drink medicine. Festivities means having to attend various thanksgiving, year-end, or Christmas parties which might entail drinking. Impaired senses pose serious risks on the road. Even a small amount of alcohol can affect your ability to ride safely. As a crucial reminder, never ride under the influence. Stay vigilant, and if you’ve consumed any alcohol, find an alternative mode of transportation to ensure a sober and secure journey. At the same time, driving under the influence of medication that affects your cognitive abilities is dangerous. Be sure to check the side effects of any medication you take before getting behind the wheel.

Check the motorcycle before riding. Riders might take the festive season too seriously and start customizing their motorcycles in line with the holidays. But remember, major modifications can lead to unpredictable motorcycle performance. Manufacturers invest time in research to get vehicle specs right, and you should, too. Regular maintenance is key to ensuring your motorcycle’s reliability. Follow recommended maintenance schedules to guarantee predictable and safe performance on the road.

Plan ahead and check for possible traffic. ThePhilippines is notoriously known for having its worst traffic during the holiday rush. This is because of the huge number of people shopping for their holiday parties and going back home to their provinces. That is why it is always advisable to plan your trips properly. Proactive planning is a key ingredient for a safe and stress-free journey. Organized travel not only saves time and effort but also contributes to reduced traffic congestion and carbon emissions. Plan your routes in advance, be mindful of traffic conditions, and enjoy a smoother, safer ride during the holiday season.

Spread positivity, avoid road rage. Driving requires a clear mind and focused attention. Unfortunately, strong emotions like anger, stress, or sadness can significantly impair judgment and decision-making, posing a major safety risk on the road. To promote safe driving practices and prevent accidents, MDPPA urges drivers to avoid getting behind the wheel when experiencing emotional distress. Stay calm, avoid confrontations, and prioritize your safety. Maintaining a cool head contributes to safer roads for everyone during the holiday rush.

“Our emotions directly impact our cognitive abilities,” said Engr. Jun Lomibao Chairman for Road Safety of MDPPA. “Driving while upset, stressed, or agitated can lead to impulsive decisions, decreased focus, and a heightened risk of accidents.”

Riders are starting to hit the road for their holiday adventures. May these tips serve as a reliable guide, steering them through the festivities and transforming every journey into a celebration marked by safety, joy, and positive vibes.

As part of the continuous efforts of MDPPA to bring safer roads for Filipinos, following these tips can enable Filipino riders to responsible safe riding.
