Promate RFID Wallet – Protect Yourself from Digital Theft

The Promate RFID Safe Leather Slim Wallet with Aluminum Card Case is interesting. Not only is it compact, durable, minimalist, and stylish, but it has an aluminum case (holds up to six credit cards) that protects your cards from both demagnetization (which renders your cards unusable) and from digital theft. Credit cards, you can read about this anywhere, have RFID chips that broadcast a signal that can be stolen, even from as far away as 10 feet away. The aluminum case in the wallet blocks RFID signals, so your credit card info, which could result in credit card fraud if stolen, is safe. This wallet is also only P995. More importantly, our review unit is pink, in all its leathery masculine glory.

The Promate RFID Wallet is either a special needs item (for those who don’t want to be digitally pickpocketed) or for those who want a bare necessities approach to wallet-item-carrying (it’s a great gift for packrats to force them to whittle down their wallets to essentials). At P995, it’s a good purchase. Though it’s available in other colors, pink has an appeal of its own. Pulling it out in a coffee shop is certainly an automatic conversation starter. You can buy it online at both Lazada and Shopee (and at stores listed below).

Because of its only-a-few-things-will-fit-in design, you have no choice but to carry sparingly. It’s leather profile and good feel in your hand make us feel it will stand the test of stains (usually soda and coffee, in my case). It’s so compact that, if you’re a guy used to hauling a thick-ass wallet with cards, bills, and folded items trash-compacted in one place, it’s refreshing. Yes, there are thinner and smaller wallets out there, but they may not have the aluminium case that protects your cards from digital theft.

The aluminium case is built-in nicely into the leather body. It doesn’t look or feel that it will fall out from long use. Six cards – I tested it – do indeed fit snugly into the case, which has a small black “switch” at the bottom. Toggle that switch and a small part of the six cards in the case pop out, cascaded nicely so you can peak at each one, and pull out the desired card.

Now, if you really must carry around a lot of credit cards, this either may not be the wallet for you, or you may need to start forcing yourself to carry fewer. Like me. Because the Promate RFID wallet loses its compact appeal when you stuff it with more cards in the non-aluminum-case part and with items that bunch up and make the wallet look like your old one.

Will it make for a good gift?

It’s a great wallet if you can live with less. God knows I’m trying. I love the idea of an RFID safe wallet and its forced-to-carry-less design. If you gift this to someone who carries too much in his/her wallet, because of how good it looks, you’ll essentially be forcing that person to seriously think about going minimalist.
