Boracay deserves to be protected by the very people who love and enjoy the wonders of the island especially this summer. This is the advice of marathon coach and race organizer Coach Rio dela Cruz, who is organizing this summer’s SKYathon, an annual beach run that champions coral reef rehabilitation.

“Boracay has always been one of my favorite vacation destinations. I support SKY Cable’s SKYATHON beach run because I believe that Boracay’s beauty has to be preserved so that our children will get to experience it too,” he said.

SKYATHON aims to help restore the island’s coral reefs by raising funds to purchase reef nurseries via the Coral REEFurbishment project in partnership with Boracay Foundation, Inc. This has been the advocacy of the run for two years in a row.

According to Coach Rio, SKYATHON, which is now on its 8th year, is the perfect venue to boost awareness about the degrading condition of Boracay’s coral reefs since it is a destination run in the island held every summer.

“The new generation will be the future guardians and protectors of our environment.  To add, race participants have been advocates to preserving their own life by staying fit and healthy.  With this, we are also encouraging them to preserve nature’s life.”

He also added that SKYATHON’s advocacy makes the beach run special compared to other races he has organized in previous years.

“What makes Skyathon different and stand out is its advocacy to preserve Boracay’s coral reef. It makes us realize that every one of us can be a hero for our environment,” Coach Rio explained.

Coral bleaching, unregulated diving, and the spread of crown-of-thorns starfish have caused damage on Boracay’s coral reefs based on an assessment by the DENR in September 2015. The rehabilitation project can help coral reefs to recover for Boracay to maintain its pristine beauty and healthy marine ecosystem.

Meanwhile, Coach Rio also shared that a beach run is more challenging because of the sand, making it an intense workout.

“Running on a beach will allow you to get a more intense workout. It’s sort of like a different version of high altitude training because of the physical properties of sand that requires the average runner to release more energy. Runners have to be properly hydrated prior to  the race and enjoy the experience of running on sand,” he elaborated.

The highly anticipated destination run will happen on April 22 (Saturday) at the Epic Beach Front (station 2). Gunstart is at  6AM. Aspiring SKYATHON runners can choose from a 3K (P500), 5K (P600), and 10K (P800) beach run. The online registration is open until April 10.
